In any place, jewellery always presents the beauty of its culture. The same thing happens in Hanoi. So let’s find out the best place to buy the most gorgeous jewellery of highest quality and finest craftsmanship in the capital of Vietnam.

1. Buying jewellery in Hang Bac street

Hang Bac street, whose name means “the street of silver”, is a small street specializing in making and selling silver and gold jewellery. It lies among Hang Ngang, Hang Đao, Hàng Bo street in the Old Quarter, just 0,3 km from Hoan Kiem lake.
From ancient times, Hang Bac street was the gathering place of the most skilled workers in making silver and gold jewellery in the historical capital of Vietnam. In the 15th century, the minister of the archbishop Luu Xuan Tin, who came from Chau Khe village (Hung Yen), was assigned by the Le court to establish a silver molding foundry at Thang Long citadel since at that time, compressed silver and gold bullion was used as the main currency. Then, he brought workers from Chau Khe to set up a silver foundry in Hanoi. After a period of time, along with silver casting, Chau Khe workers also made gold and silver decorations and accesories. By the beginning of the 19th century, under the Nguyen Dynasty, the silver molding foundry was transferred to Hue Citadel, but the majority of Chau Khe craftsmen still remained in Thang Long to work as jewelers and established their craftsmanship at Hang Bac Street today. Skilled craftsmen from other two villages of Dinh Cong (Hanoi) and Dong Xam () also came to Hang Bac to make a career. That’s the story of how Hang Bac street was born and became a place specializing in the manufacture of silver and gold jewelry in Hanoi.
Today, Hang Bac Street is only about 0.5 km long, but there are hundreds of big and small shops making and selling gold and silver jewellery. Here, you can find many jewellery pieces with sophisticated design and in various shape and size, such as earrings, torques, rings, necklaces, bracelets... Now even though the gold and silver jewellery-making industry have been equipped with new technology from foreign countries, but there is no machine that can surpass the sophistication and originality of the products made by the hand of traditional craftsmen in Hang Bac.
